Some days in history are marked by events that are particularly geographical.
In 1959, the geography of the USA changed as the 50th state was added, This would have meant changes to atlases and other mapping, and a million other small changes over the next few years. It's a reminder that the atlas you have on your shelf is probably in some way out of date.
The OS make thousands of changes every day to their master map of the UK.
The 50th state was Hawai'i.
