Jan 26: Create some Stravart

There have been plenty of Strava art projects where someone has set a route running using the app (which is used to keep track of walks, runs or cycle trips), and then made a shape with their movements so that the route they take creates a recognisable design.

For many people, Strava is an important part of their quotidian routines.

Search STRAVA ART on Google Earth images to see hundreds of examples.
Some of these are slightly immature and rude...
Here's a rabbit, for example.

Some larger scale projects have also involved planes for example making shapes in the sky while on test flights, when there are no passengers on board, but a certain mileage has to be covered to prove airworthiness.
Here's an example from Boeing, when testing a new Dreamliner plane.

Strava is not the only app used for such purposes of course.
Other options, some of which I've used myself, include:

  • MotionX-GPS
  • Cyclemeter
  • Map my Run/Ride
  • Runtastic
  • Runkeeper
  • Runmeter
etc.
There are quite a few of these apps which also allow you to export your track as a GPX file. This file format can be added into GIS packages (including Google Earth) and software too and visualised.
Why not have a go at making some Stravart of your own.
Start simple...
Just make a few geometric shapes to begin with perhaps: a circle, or triangle or square.
You could also spell out some letters, or your name.

One company called Routeink will also make a poster from your routes if you want to have one. You can apparently generate the final version with no obligation to buy to have a look at what it might look like. Here's their Instagram gallery - looks quite good to me.
They use the phrase STRAVART for such things.

It may also be an opportunity to get yourself outside and also contribute to your fitness targets.

I'd love to see what Stravart you might create - how about a dog while walking the dog?
