Feb 24: Anti-Racist Geography

For some time now, there has been an effort to consider the curriculum, and removing some of the elements which have been there for decades, and which are deeply problematic in some cases.

When George Floyd was killed in May 2020, there was a surge of support for reexploring the representation of black and minority groups in society generally, but also within education as an important part of any society. This places a lot of power, and responsibility on teachers to explore where their colour blindness may lie, and the need for further training in this area.

The Anti Racist Geography Curriculum Twitter feed has appeared in the last week or so and already shared some useful links for teachers, with a re-examination of some important themes.

My own school has started an audit of the curriculum, and we now have a standard entry onto department meeting agenda to explore new themes.

This has a series of tweets which will hopefully grow and lead to further debate about opportunities to decolonise the geography curriculum.

It includes a link to an article on a recent debate held at Leeds University - a long-standing area that the GA has worked to support. I have added a page to my own department's area on the school VLE to keep colleagues updated on what we are proposing, and what we have already done, to reconsider what and how we teach. One would hope that everyone is working every day to rebalance their curriculum and introduce what is sometimes called 'diversity' but might also be called 'fairness' or 'appropriate representation' of all groups involved.

There are more links than one might at first suspect, even with physical geography topics.
