Another reminder of why geographical knowledge sometimes comes in handy. Another quiz question for you to test yourself with, from this week's 'Who wants to be a Millionaire'.
This one was worth thousands of pounds. A 'pub quiz' curriculum was a phrase directed towards Michael Gove's curriculum reform proposals in 2013. The same term returned here in 2018.
This Think Piece on the GA's website explores the same theme with respect to the important area of place knowledge.
The acquisition of extensive locational knowledge of the world may seem at first to be low level and trivial – more akin to a pub quiz than an academic subject. But students need to have a locational framework to provide a context for their geographical study. The GA, in its 2009 Manifesto, likens this knowledge to the ‘vocabulary’ of the subject. The geographical information and facts contained in maps and other sources only become knowledge of any lasting value when they become connected and part of a system – i.e. when students are able to give them meaning.
