For all of those fortunate enough to have a home, a regular event during the day would be to look out of the window. It may be to see what the weather is like first thing in the morning, keep an eye out for the postman, or see what the neighbours are getting up to, twitching the net curtains. Perhaps it's to see the Just Eat delivery, or the supermarket shop on its way.
Some people are fortunate enough to have an expansive view of countryside, or the sea. When I was younger, we lived on the edge of Rotherham, and my view was an expansive one from the church and open fields to the left, to our own long garden with trees at the bottom, distant houses, and then to the right, a longer view stretching maybe 6 or 7 miles out towards the M18 across Wickersley Gorse, golf course and farmland, with distant pylons.
During the first lockdown, a Facebook group started which was a simple idea: people sharing the view from a window of their home. This led to a book and has spawned thousands of shared images of lives lived in different circumstances, and some very enviable views indeed. There are over 2.2 million members of this group now, which shows how we like a good nose into other people's lives.
Window Swap emerged during 2020, and offers a simple concept: a relatively long, looped video of a view out of a window somewhere in the world. Take a look now and see what emerges. I have Clara's window in Singapore currently....
Follow the account on Instagram to see the newest windows which are added to the site each week. The site has grown since I first noticed it, and there are lots more views.
What can you see out of your window today?
Check out the Bruce Hornsby song that inspired the post title as well. A very geographical theme...
