Jan 20: A poem every day

Poets are weavers of words, and can tell the story of a place to great effect. The Poetry of Place project was an attempt to capture hundreds of these poems. I contributed one early on in the project. It's called "Six inches to the Fenland Mile" and tells of the difficulties the Ordnance Survey found in mapping such a changeable landscape.

There are a number of poetry anthologies which offer a poem for each day, and there are very often poems which are relevant to particular days in the year. Make time each day to engage with poetry, and perhaps have a go at writing some yourself: it's good for you.

Amanda Gorman was part of today's inauguration for the 46th President: Joe Biden. She is a 22 year old Harvard graduate, and was the Inaugural Poet, following in the footsteps of Robert Frost and Maya Angelou amongst others. Here's her poem for those who may have missed it.

If you want to hear some of Simon Armitage's poetry: who is not only the current Poet Laureate but also a geography graduate, then you can watch his walk to Robin Hood's Bay as part of a series of Winter Walks, which are filmed by the walkers themselves. It's a lovely relaxing show with natural sounds, a slow pace, stories of coastal change, and some familiar Yorkshire landscapes.
